Goodbye, Summer!
What's Happening
The temperatures finally started to go down after the heat warnings and global warming that is going on as the world burns around us. Think about donating to the areas affected by the fires. Two major places to donate if you can are:
Maui, Hawaiʻi Fires
East/West coast Canada Fires
- Canadian Red Cross Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada Fires Appeal
- United Way of the Northwest Territories
However small, any donation helps. Thank you. Now let's get to the newsletter.
What's Happening?
Streaming starts back up on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11am PT (-7 GMT) / 2pm ET (-4 GMT) and I am trying to get projects off my plate so I can actually start making planned streams and not streams that are off the cuff. Although my best laid plans and never made sometimes. As of this newsletter, I'll have a few impromptu streams already done because I have managed to get GOG Galaxy (game platform) and stream it via my iPhone camera and OBS. It's taped and bubble gummed together like MacGyver, but it works! Come join the fun! (I've been streaming daily since doing this).
September is going to be some downtime for me as I got a lot going on personally that I need to focus on. Among these items is my mental health. I'll be working on getting the podcast episodes rolled out and I will have released at least one at the time of this writing.
Accessibility
An update on WCAG 2.2 via Rachael Bradley Montgomery, AGWG (Accessibility Guidelines Working Group) Co-chair, via X:
I wrote a little blurb over at DEV: Main-ly Speaking.
Craig Abbott wrote about the "European Accessibility Act: Article 32, and why it sucks!" and if you don't know about the European Disability Act, then check out Craig's article here, "European Accessibility Act: What you need to know".
and a great article about What Happens When Developers Are Liable for Accessibility?. Makes you think!
Conferences
These are the remaining appearances I have in 2023:
- MagnoliaJS, Jackson, MS. October 17-18
- ConnectTech, Atlanta, GA. October 24-26
If you're planning to attend MagnoliaJS in Jackson, MS (and I hope you are) I have a code for you to get 10% off a ticket! Head on over to the MagnoliaJS Eventbrite page and grab your ticket today! I will be wearing my lobster costume during my talk. Be prepared and I will have stickers for everyone until I run out!
October 26-28 I'll be Atlanta for Connect Tech! I have an all-day accessibility workshop and a talk about the four principle of accessibility! Hope to see you there!
Plugs
The podcast, the stream are the two of mine I will plug. Homer and I are trying to get some more podcast episodes out, as we have two in the can and some appearances to record that have been scheduled soon.
Lobsters! 🦞
If you can get your hands on lobster or sometimes when places like Costco have lobster tails, grab yourself some. Here's a quick recipe for a Maine-style lobster roll, the favorite of this particular guy.
- Boil the tails (or lobsters) time for tails are usually 5-6 minutes for 3 tails and for a whole lobster, 7-9 minutes.
- Get all the meat out of the lobster (tail, claws, knuckles, legs, head) or the tail meat (wash the tail meat if there is a dark brown substance running down the center of the tail. You do not want to eat that.)
- Toss lightly in mayonnaise (use the Kewpie Japanese mayo, the one in the bag that has the Japanese writing on it, that is more tangy than other mayo and uses the egg yolks).
- Chiffonade (cut into ribbons) some iceberg lettuce or Romaine (or any lettuce of your choice, Butter lettuce works great too).
- Grill (flat top or in frying pan) hot dog rolls in a buttered skillet or flat top. Grill rolls until golden brown on each side.
- Add a little extra mayo to the bun on the inside.
- Add lettuce. Then add lobster meat.
- If you want to spice it up a bit, add chives and Old Bay seasoning on top and enjoy!
